Get your Massachusetts permit first.

  Be 16 and a Massachusetts resident

  You cannot already hold a license or permit in another state.

  Complete the online application first

  Do it before you go anywhere. Turning up at a Service Center without it is the most common wasted trip we hear about.

  Bring your ID documents

  Proof of identity, of Massachusetts residency and of your Social Security number. The RMV’s ID checklist tells you exactly which combinations they accept — check it the night before, not in the parking lot.

  Pay the $30 and sit the test

  25 questions, 18 correct to pass, 25 minutes. You can take it online or at a Service Center, in any of 37 languages.

  Carry the printed permit

  Keep it on you every time you practice, and bring it to your road test. It is valid for two years.
